Your gift today will help dozens of kids learn the joy and art of tap dance
As we continue with our founding mission, KSR has developed a comprehensive grade school program incorporating tap dance to enrich student’s after-school experiences. This program can be brought into elementary and middle schools in any city across the country.
In 2008, the Company began residency relationships with two inner city, St. Paul schools. KSR has expanded this program over the years to now serve six schools and our programs have become a semester long (minimum) project, named “Body of Sound” or “Tap with Class”. Our long-term, high quality arts enrichment program has fostered strong relationships with numerous schools, funded initially only by grants.
Our programs provide a safe and supportive environment for interaction and engagement as illustrated in the Youth Performance Quality Assessment (YPQA), a tool used by 21st Century Grantees such as the St. Paul Public Middle Schools. Since 2010 KSR has invested over $150,000 in outreach programing, all free to participating students and staff.
While the subject of this kinetic learning is tap dance – the skills, technique, musicality and culture of this art form – the improvisational and collaborative nature of tap dance and tap culture also allow us to teach problem-solving skills, respect for diversity of voices and talents, how to accept leadership roles and how to share knowledge by teaching peers.
The impact of this type of teaching means that once we’ve taught within a school, the school (and students) then wants us to return. This has led to multi-year teaching and student engagement at Washington Technology, St. Paul Music Academy, Mississippi Magnet, Maxfield, Linwood and Lucy Laney schools.
